Münster, 14 May 2013 - The future belongs to sustainable construction: public, but also commercial and residential buildings are increasingly planned and built on the principle of sustainability. Construction materials used in buildings certified under LEED, BREEAM, DGNB or a comparable national scheme must meet strict requirements in terms of environment-friendliness and health. With ArmaFlex SF990 and ArmaFlex Ultima SF990 Armacell is now the first manufacturer of elastomeric insulation materials to offer solvent-free adhesives for installing its products in order to meet the higher requirements. As it is more time-consuming to work with water-based than classic contact adhesives, Armacell recommends using ArmaFlex SF990 adhesives in a system together with self-adhesive ArmaFlex insulation materials.

As an alternative to adhesives that contain solvents, Armacell now also offers water-based dispersion adhesives: ArmaFlex SF990 and ArmaFlex Ultima SF990 are odourless and do not release harmful solvents while being applied. Furthermore, unlike classic contact adhesives, there is no danger of combustion or explosion and so they are not subject to transport restrictions. The one-component adhesives can be used for operating temperatures between -30 and +100 °C. The ArmaFlex SF990 adhesive is suitable for gluing all Armacell insulation materials based on synthetic rubber (with the exception of HT/ArmaFlex and ArmaFlex Ultima). The ArmaFlex Ultima SF990 adhesive was specially developed for use with ArmaFlex Ultima and other insulation materials based on Armaprene® synthetic rubber.

Compared to contact adhesives, water-based adhesives are more time-consuming to apply. Therefore, when using ArmaFlex SF990 adhesives, it is essential to take a structured approach to the work. To save time in projects with sustainable building requirements, Armacell recommends self-adhesive tubes and sheets. In this way wet bonding with solvent-free adhesives can be limited to butt joints and seams of complex parts of the insulation. In addition to the general ArmaFlex installation guidelines, Armacell provides further instructions for the new ArmaFlex SF990 adhesives. To ensure good results, these adhesives should only be applied by companies that have been certified and/or trained by Armacell. Therefore before starting the application it is essential to receive practical advice from the Armacell Technical Customer Service team.

The future belongs to sustainable construction

Green building is of increasing importance for the construction industry: public, but also commercial and residential buildings are increasingly planned and built on the principle of sustainability. This applies both to the construction of new buildings and the reno-vation of existing buildings. Green building certification now plays a significant role in the construction and real-estate business. LEED, BREEAM, DGNB or comparable national schemes not only demand high resource efficiency in the construction and operation of the building, they also define strict requirements in terms of environment-friendliness and health for the construction materials used. The solvent-free ArmaFlex Ultima SF990 adhesive was specially developed to meet the constantly rising standards of the green building programmes. Using ArmaFlex insulation materials conserves natural resources and reduces the emission of climate-damaging CO2.
