FIRE SAFETY IN ENERGY-EFFICIENT HOSPITALS
To make hospitals a safe place for patients, visitors and employees, it is important to take all available measures to minimise the risk of harm from fires. In the event of a fire, ArmaFlex Ultima® exhibits 10 times less smoke than a standard elastomeric product, making it the safest solution for the insulation of cooling equipment. Based on the innovative ArmaPrene™ technology, the low-smoke material extends the evacuation time and enhances visibility.
NEW STAVANGER UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Settled on the hill of Ullandhaug in the scenic surroundings of Lysefjord, the new University Hospital will be one of Norway’s largest hospitals expected to serve a population of 400,000 in South-Rogaland. The project called “SUS 2023” aims to provide a modern, specialist healthcare solution, that prioritises the future needs of its patients.
The university hospital is designed as a garden city with four rectangular buildings connected by glass bridges over inner courtyards, with nature flowing freely between them to support patients’ recovery. All in all, around 67,000 m of cooling pipes had to be protected against condensation and energy losses. For the insulation of pipes running in escape routes, the engineering consultancy COWI AS (Oslo,Norway) specified the BL-s1,d0 classified ArmaFlex Ultima.
GREEN BUILDING
ArmaFlex Ultima meets the most stringent environmental requirements and saves specifiers time by being accredited in the main green building schemes.
ARMAFLEX - ENHANCING ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Hospitals are energy-intensive buildings. Insulating the mechanical equipment with ArmaFlex® is one of the easiest, most economical and efficient ways of saving energy in healthcare facilities.
NORTH MEDICAL CENTRE (ESTONIA)
In 2022, the largest hospital in Estonia was extended by a new 14,000 m² building. Keeping stable temperatures in the oncology department was key, when planning the HVAC equipment. For the insulation of the cooling system the general contractor Merko Ehitus Eesti specified ArmaFlex Ultima. The BL-s1,d0 classified material guarantees reliable condensation control and energy savings in the long term. To ensure maximum safety ArmaFix® Ultima pipehangers were used to mount the pipes.
TURKU UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL T3
(FINLAND)
The extension of the Turku University Hospital (TYKS) was built over the railway and the E18 motorway. With a total area of 54,000 m² over eight floors, T3 will join the various parts of the hospital to create one functional building. Being the safest and most reliable elastomeric foam insulation, ArmaFlex Ultima was specified for the insulation of the cooling equipment by the general constructor Hartela Oy (Helsinki).
ARMAFLEX ULTIMA - PUTTING FIRE SAFETY FIRST
In the event of a fire, hospital staff may need to help patients move to a place of greater safety. This takes extra precious minutes. By mitigating fire and smoke risk, our ArmaFlex Ultima improves visibility and respiration, thus extending the time to safely evacuate a hospital. Based on patented ArmaPrene technology, ArmaFlex Ultima is the first flexible technical insulation material in the world with fire class BL-s1,d0 and exhibits 10 times less smoke in a fire than a standard elastomeric foam. While standard elastomeric products with brominated flame retardants tend to produce a high level of smoke, our breakthrough technology does not contain any brominated flame retardants.
