COMPARTMENTATION

Regulated by building codes in many countries, buildings are sub-divided in so-called fire compartments and in some cases also smoke compartments. In the event of a fire emergency in a building, the strategy is to keep the fire and smoke contained in a limited area of the building (the fire compartment) for a given amount of time (referred to as the fire rating). Fire ratings are country dependent and range typically between 30 and 120 minutes (even up to 240).

Properly designed and installed Passive Fire Protection systems, and fire compartments in particular, provide multiple levels of fire safety:

  • Provide building users sufficient time to safely make their way to a means of egress and escape from the building
  • Keep escape routes free from smoke and other toxic gasses
  • Allow emergency responders to safely rescue building users from the fire scene and attempt to extinguish the fire
FIRESTOP SYSTEMS

In order to provide comfort, safety and security, buildings are equipped with mechanical and electrical systems. The services connected to those appliances run across buildings and penetrate fire-rated walls, floors and service shafts and therefore compromise the fire compartmentation strategy.

Such services include:

  • Insulated and non-insulated, combustible and non-combustible pipes
  • Cable trays, cable bundles and lose cables
  • Air ducts, with or without fire dampers

As part of the compartmentation strategy, firestop systems are designed to seal the penetrations of the above mentioned services. Such systems should be tested to the governing local fire standards and installed in line with the details shown in the fire test report.
